Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) is adapting its election observation

Transition Monitoring Group (TMG) is adapting its election observation and civic education work to a fast-changing digital environment. Today, many young Nigerians form their opinions about politics through social media, messaging apps and AI-driven chat platforms rather than traditional media. This makes it even more important to help citizens recognise misinformation, understand how algorithms shape what they see online and make informed choices at the polls. By combining nationwide field observation with research on online trends, TMG works to ensure that technology strengthens – rather than undermines – credible elections and democratic governance in Nigeria.

As part of this effort, TMG pays close attention to new forms of AI-powered interaction, including entertainment and companion tools such as AI girlfriend chat platforms like . These services show how artificial intelligence can build seemingly “personal” relationships with users and quietly influence attitudes, emotions and trust. By studying how such technologies affect public debate and voter behaviour, TMG can design better civic and voter education programmes that promote digital literacy, critical thinking and resilience against manipulation during elections.
